Car Buying & Financing Considerations:

There are many ways to obtain financing on a vehicle.

Some people do their homework, visit a loan officer, get pre-approved and shop knowing how much they can responsibility afford, and buy a quality vehicle for a quality price.   O
thers, fall in love with a car, truck or SUV and within minutes make a financial decision at a dealership that binds them for 84 months (that's seven years!)*

Buying a vehicle is a personal decision.  It is not your credit union's place to tell you what to do, or how to do it.  ICCU does however, have an obligation and a commitment to help its members get the best deal, rate and financing terms for their individual situation.

ICCU encouragees members to spend 15 minutes with a loan officer PRIOR to shopping for any vehicle.  The conversation can include calculating payments, determining values and re-sale, consider options and back-end products and warranties.  That 15 minutes may be the best investment you'll ever make!

Tips to Getting
Your Best New or Used Car Deal:

1.  Do your homework.  Read "Consumer Report" magazine's auto buying issue (usually in April).  Research auto buying and evaluation sites/books and articles. Check out: Buying Advice.com  The time invested can save money and help avoid repair headaches in the future.

2.  Don't buy on impulse.  Impulse decisions usually cost extra cash. Sleep on it -- buying a car is a big investment.  Make sure you are buying the right car, for the right price, at the right term*.  ICCU loan officers can help you with this process.

2.  Visit your credit union BEFORE you shop.  You can count on your credit union to give you solid financial support and direction.  Conversations are always free!

3.  Get pre-approved to shop with confidence.   Spending 15 minutes BEFORE you shop with an ICCU loan officer to get pre-approved will help you negotiate your best deal.

4.  If visiting a dealership -- insist on ICCU financing.   Many dealers submit your financing request to numerous financial insitutions, which may alter your credit score, and most certainly increases inquiries on your credit report.  Stick with ICCU, and tell the dealer you are working with that you "insist on ICCU financing," for your best deal, and only one inquiry on your credit report.

5. Protect Your Credit: If visiting a local auto dealer, direct them to "not pull a credit report on you."  Its not unheard of that your credit report is being pulled as you test drive a vehicle, even if you did not ask for financing.  Protect your credit, protect your financial information and get pre-approved at ICCU before you shop.  We will keep your financial information safe.

Direct Dealer Financing  & ICCU:

If you wish to visit a dealer to do it all, your credit union will be there every step of the way.

Simply tell the dealership you want "ICCU financing" and your application will be processed in minutes!

  • PLUS many others on the DILLs system (Dealer Indirect Lending and Leasing System).  If you don't see an area dealer listed that you wish to work with -- just ask them for "ICCU financing."  Chances are, ICCU has an arrangement with them already.

*ICCU is conscious not to put any members into vehicle loan that will put them "upside down" or "under water."  For example, low payments sound super affordable for 84 months. The problem is, if you wish to trade it in after 3-4 years, you may owe more on the loan that the vehicle is worth. ICCU's loan officers will help you obtain low-cost financing at reasonable terms, so you don't end up in a challenging financial situation just because you want to drive and own a quality vehicle.

 The GAP Advantage
Keeps You in the Driver's Seat!

Protect Your Vehicle Investment, Not Just Its Value
Most insurance policies only cover the value of your vehicle -- something that rapidly declines during the first few years of ownership -- and in many cases, your loan value could be higher than the value of your vehicle.

You can protect your vehicle, boat, motorcycle or RV with Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP ).  GAP is a product that covers the "gap" between the vehicles value and the amount you still owe.  Essentially, GAP protects you and your entire investment from substantial loss.

At ICCU, GAP coverage is offered to members at a discount, and the cost can be combined with your ICCU loan, so there are no out of pocket costs!

What Does GAP Cover?
GAP was designed for all drivers, whether you finance or lease a new or used vehicle.  It covers automobiles, vans, light trucks, motorcycles, boats, travel trailers, motor homes, golf carts, jet skis, snowmobiles and almost any other vehicle.  GAP coverage goes into effect when you need it most -- when your vehicle is stolen and isn't recovered, or it totaled in an accident and cannot be repaired.

GAP covers the difference between your primary carrier insurance settlement and the payoff of your loan balance, less delinquent payments, late charges, refundable service warranty contracts and other insurance related charges.  Included in this difference is your primary insurance deductible, which is limited to $1,000.  Deductible reimbursement is available in most, but not  all states.  Consult your credit union representative for the availability of this coverage.

GAP Example: The following is a typical example of how GAP coverage comes through for you:

Original purchase price:  $25,000
Loan balance after one year:  $21,000
Vehicle's current value as determined by your auto insurance company: $16,000

Your lost investment without GAP:
Your remaining unpaid loan balance ("the gap"):  $5,000

GAP pays the following toward the finnacing or leasing of a replacement vehicle:

GAP pays the difference: $5,000
GAP Advantage pays:  $1,000
TOTAL GAP Advantage Benefit:  $6,000

The GAP advantage is an OPTIONAL benefit that gives you further peace of mind.

If the vehicle you are purchasing ever becomes "totaled," or is stolen and not recovered, GAP advantage pays an additional $1,000 toward the purchase or lease of a replacement vehicle.

Not only will you receive the difference between the value of your vehicle and its unpaid loan balance, you also get a head start on financing or leasing a new or used replacement vehicle when you refinance or lease through the same financial insitution.
